Shicoh Develops Small Motor for Camera Phone Autofocus Functionality

According to Nikkei Report, Japanese Shicoh Engineering has developed what the company calls the world's smallest linear motor for the autofocus function of camera phones. The motor measures 10mmx10mmx4.2mm, with length and height being reduced by 2mm to 4mm and thickness by 3mm in comparison with existing models. A considerable number of mobile phone makers have reportedly made inquiries about the new motor. Shicoh plans to start shipping its new offering in April, and it expects monthly sales to hit 500,000 units in October 2006.
